Lake Minnetonka’s Fourth of July celebration will be a bang

This year’s Fourth of July celebration on Lake Minnetonka will be a bang. The South Lake community will celebrate the nation’s favorite holiday with a day full of activities on Tuesday, July 4 in Excelsior.

The celebration has been an annual tradition since 1888. The event continues to be a free, public event because of the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber’s year-round efforts to raise funds, generous local sponsorships and much-appreciated donations.

The day begins early with the Firecracker Run, including 1-mile, 5K and 10K races. All races start at Excelsior Elementary, 441 Oak St., and end in the Excelsior Commons on Lake Street in Excelsior.

Runners can enjoy challenging, scenic terrain that includes stunning views of historic downtown Excelsior and Lake Minnetonka as they navigate the race routes.

The 5K and 10K races are chip-timed and participants will receive a wicking T-shirt. The 1-mile participants will have the option to buy a shirt.

Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in the 5K and 10K.

The first-, second- and third-place finishers in the 1-mile will receive a gift card.

Race packet pick-up will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, July 3, at Excelsior Elementary School. Same-day registration will be available, starting at 6:15 a.m. at Excelsior Elementary.

Events during the day include a sand sculpture contest, petting zoo, kids parade, food vendors and musical performances.

The Primrose School of Minnetonka and Woody Love will sponsor and organize the Water Street Kids Parade. Line up along Water Street in Excelsior to watch the children, dressed in their best patriotic parade attire, march from Gary’s First Class Car Care to the Excelsior Commons. Everyone can enjoy the free Popsicle social and DJ dance party.

The celebration will end at dusk with the national anthem and fireworks show in the Excelsior Commons.

The chamber of commerce asks for donations to fund the fireworks, at bit.ly/2sZ2K6Y.

Volunteers are also needed for the event. Call the chamber of commerce at 952-474-6461 for more information.
